Gambia were the standout qualifiers for the last-16 at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Argentina after a sensational win over France helped them to the top of Group F.

Football superpowers France have tumbled out of the tournament after their 2-1 defeat to the unfancied Africans, whose senior side has never qualified for the World Cup and is ranked 120th in the FIFA standings, at the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza.

An own goal by Tanguy Zoukrou and a strike from Mamin Sanyang, either side of a Wilson Odobert goal, completed a famous win and Gambian captain Alagie Saine even saw a penalty saved.

France, the 2013 under-20 world champions, had already lost 2-1 to South Korea before their clash with Gambia.

They ended with a 3-1 victory over Honduras but it was not enough to go through to the knockout phase as one of the best third place sides.

Gambia earned a 2-1 win over Honduras, who finished last, and then drew 0-0 with South Korea as both sides went through.

In Group A, stand-in hosts Argentina won all three matches at the Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades in Santiago del Estero to sail through.

They saw off Uzbekistan 2-1, Guatemala 3-0 and New Zealand 5-0 to top the pile.

Uzbekistan finished as runners-up and New Zealand did enough to go through in third as Guatemala exited.

United States enjoyed a perfect record in Group B, beating Ecuador 1-0, Fiji 3-0 and Slovakia 2-0 as they went through without conceding a goal at the Estadio San Juan del Bicentenario in San Juan

Ecuador and Slovakia progressed in second and third respectively with Fiji going home.

Colombia recorded two wins and a draw to top Group C - beating Israel 2-1, Japan 2-1 and then drawing 1-1 with Senegal in La Plata at the Estadio Único Diego Armando Maradona, a stadium named after Argentina's inspirational 1986 World Cup-winning captain.

Israel finished second to advance with Japan and Colombia both going out.

A three-way tie in Group D saw Brazil, Italy and Nigeria all finish on six points after two wins, with all advancing.

Dominican Republic finished last to exit the tournament.

England were the Group E winners with seven points after seeing off Tunisia 1-0, Uruguay 3-2 and drawing 0-0 with Iraq at the Estadio Único Diego Armando Maradona.

Uruguay and Tunisia both qualified as Iraq went out.

Only eight of the 24 teams have been eliminated leading into the last-16.

Gambia are now due meet Uruguay with Argentina set to take on Nigeria and the United States meeting New Zealand.

Uzbekistan are scheduled to play Israel, Brazil will meet Tunisia, Colombia will play Slovakia and Ecuador will take on South Korea.

In the most anticipated game, England will meet Italy in a clash between two football heavyweights.

The knockout matches are due to start tomorrow.

Argentina is hosting the tournament at short notice after Indonesia was stripped of the rights in March after objections to Israel competing.
