The French Foreign Ministry is debating whether to allow its overseas Embassies to continue using the Terre de Jeux 2024 label following the conclusion of next year's Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris.

The slogan was created from the very beginning of the capital city's bid phase, with organisers using it as a way to ensure the Games were experienced across all of France.

A total of 122 French Embassies abroad have been granted the label.

Embassies in Eritrea and Benin were the latest to be awarded the status on December 13 last year in Montpellier, which is currently hosting the FISE urban sports festival.

"The Terre de Jeux label, which has been granted to Embassies overseas, and what we need to work on but is not decided yet is what do we do with this label afterwards once the Games are over," French Foreign Ministry Ambassador for Sports Samuel Ducroquet told insidethegames at the Urban Sports Summit which runs parallel with FISE Montpellier.

"Do we enable the Embassies to keep this label?

"Do we allow them to use this now keyword, that is pretty famous in France and getting more and more popular overseas as well, to promote our sports diplomacy.

"We know that the stakes will remain very high in the aftermath of Paris 2024 because we have started working together with Senegal and Dakar 2026 for the Youth Olympic Games and we are accompanying them in their preparation of this major event.

The French Embassy in Japan was the first to obtain the label abroad when it was officially awarded the title by Paris 2024 chief executive Étienne Thobois before the re-arranged 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

"We already know that sports diplomacy will play a role after 2024 but we need to work more on the specific plan for the legacy but now the delivery of the [Olympic] Games is the absolute priority so it is hard to combine objectives at the same time."

Allowing Embassies to continue using the label would mean that French expatriates continue to benefit from sporting programmes run by Paris 2024 and directly experience the legacy of the Games.

"There is a need to discuss the future of the label, since the brand is directly linked to Paris 2024, and ensure that Embassies remain mobilised to keep the label alive," Ducroquet said.

The Ministry is also looking to cement the legacy of urban sports at 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games, which has Baseball5 on its programme, through a cooperation pact between Senegal and Paris 2024.
