Reigning European Games champions Portugal will meet hosts Poland in the Kraków-Małopolska 2023 beach soccer tournament after the group stage draw was made.

Portugal won the men's event at the 2019 European Games in Minsk and have been placed in Group A alongside the home side.

The group will also see a repeat of the last final as Minsk silver medallists Spain were drawn alongside their near neighbours.

Azerbaijan, which hosted the 2015 European Games in Baku, completes the group.

Group B features Switzerland who won the bronze medals at the 2021 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Russia, as well as the European Beach Soccer League (EBSL) title.

The Swiss, who won bronze in Minsk, have been joined by Italy, Ukraine and Moldova.

The top two teams in both groups will qualify for the semi-finals.

Russia are the reigning world champions but the country is banned from the European Games due to the invasion of Ukraine.

Six teams will also a contest a women's event, with Poland, Portugal and Czech Republic placed in Group A.

EBSL and World Beach Games champions Spain, Italy and Ukraine will play in Group B with the top two again qualifying for the last four.

A women's beach soccer tournament has not been held at the European Games before.

Beach soccer at Kraków-Małopolska 2023 will take place between June 27 and July 1.

Competition will take place at the new Tarnów Beach Arena which will also host beach handball.

Tarnów lies around 85 kilometres to the east of Kraków.
