It was a mixed day for seeds at the International Boxing Association Men's World Boxing Championships here.

Pitted against Bilge Kağan Kanlı of Turkey in the light welterweight category, Armenian first seed Hovhannes Bachkov, an Olympic and world bronze medallist, won 5-0 by unanimous decision.

Bachkov opted to sit back and counter, covering his face while landing some heavy blows on Kanlı's face.

He executed the strategy and maintained it until the end to seal a routine win.

On the other hand, Jordanian top seed Zeyad Ishaish lost against José Rodríguez of Ecuador in the light middleweight class.

Ishaish was dominant in the beginning, taking the first round 5-0 but Rodríguez seems to have cracked the code in round two.

While the South American lost the second round 3-2, judges awarded him a 4-3 split decision victory after round three.

It was a close bout, and the result did not go down well with the Jordanian delegation.

In the welterweight class, Georgian first seed Lasha Guruli was up against Alexandru Paraschiv of the Republic of Moldova.

World and European medallist Guruli, despite receiving some blows, bagged round one 4-1.

Both boxers were aggressive, but the Georgian had the edge over Paraschiv.

The second round also went to Guruli by the same scoreline.

Both boxers were focusing on movement and coming up with a flurry of punches when the opponent was cornered.

But the Georgian was more effective, winning 5-0 via unanimous decision.

There was an upset in the welterweight class as Serbian second seed Vahid Abasov was surprised by Christiann Palacio of Venezuela.

The battle was intense between the two, with Abasov, a European champion keeping it under control for most of the bout.

But the judges felt otherwise as Palacio bagged a 4-3split decision victory.

The Serbian delegation also looked unhappy after the result.

Japanese world champion Sewon Okazawa survived a scare to beat Makszims Pilipec of Hungary in the light middleweight category.

Okazawa did not enjoy the best of starts but recovered well to take round one 3-2.

He bettered that performance to take round two 5-0.

The Hungarian was troubling his opponent with some blows to the face but Okazawa held on to win 5-0 after a close third round.

Germany were eliminated from the World Championships after neutral athlete Devrim Gökduman lost to José Viafara of Colombia in the light welterweight category.

Gökduman was not able to counter the quick punches launched by Viafara as the Colombian won 5-0 via unanimous decision.

Uzbeks continued their fine form as Ruslan Abdullaev defeated fourth seed Richarno Colin of Mauritius.

Two-time Commonwealth Games medallist Colin was outclassed in the first round with Abdullaev going defensive for the remainder of the bout to secure a 5-0 unanimous decision victory in the light welterweight category.

Asian champion Saidjamshid Jafarov brought more joy to the home fans when he got the better of Marco Verde of Mexico in the light middleweight category.

Jafarov was superb as he threw some heavy blows against Verde to win 4-1 on split decision.

African champion Merven Clair of Mauritius went down to Baýramdurdy Nurmuhammedow of Turkmenistan in the light middleweight class.

Clair, who was the sixth seed, took the first round 5-0.

But he lost some momentum in the second round, with Nurmuhammedow cornering his opponent and getting crucial points and a 4-1 split decision win.

Competition is due to continue tomorrow with bouts in the flyweight, featherweight, middleweight and super heavyweight categories.
