Hosts Slovenia pulled off a stunning fightback to beat Romania 3-2 in Koper to book their place in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals for the first time.

Romania were closing in on victory after Ana Bogdan beat Kaja Juvan 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 and Jaqueline Adina Cristian overcame Tamara Zidanšek 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 but Slovenia refused to give in at the Sport Park Bonifika.

Zidanšek came from a set down and edged a tight second-set tiebreak to defeat Bogdan 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 to give Slovenia a lifeline before Juvan overcame Cristian 6-2, 6-4.

Slovenia also found themselves a set behind in the deciding doubles match that started yesterday and concluded today due to wet weather.

Juvan and Zidanšek thrilled the home crowd as they completed a superb comeback, beating Irina Maria Bara and Monica Niculescu 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

It was only the eighth time in the competition’s history that a team had recovered from 2-0 down to win and the first time it had happened since 2015.

"I just feel very proud of the whole team because we were in a completely lost situation and we managed to fight and it showed a lot of character from all of us," said Zidanšek.

"We have an incredible team spirit and we have a lot of fun and I think that’s what showed on court."

The qualifier between Canada and Belgium also went down to the wire in Vancouver with the hosts emerging victorious.

It was a rollercoaster encounter before the Canadian team triumphed 3-2 after Gabriela Dabrowski and Leylah Fernandez joined forces to beat Kirsten Klipkens and Greet Minnen 6-1, 6-2 in the final doubles match.

"I think Gaby and Leylah handled the pressure of the doubles really well and I think they played some of the best doubles tennis I’ve ever seen," said Canada captain Heidi El Tabakh.

Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine produced an impressive 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over former French Open champion Barbora Krejčíková but her team came up short against their Czech opponents.

Playing in Antalya in Turkey as a neutral venue due to the war in Ukraine, the Czech Republic secured a 3-1 win with Markéta Vondroušová earning two wins.

Britain reached the semi-finals in 2022 but they will not be appearing in the Finals this year after losing 3-1 to a strong French team.

Spain beat Mexico 3-1, while Germany and Kazakhstan saw off Brazil and Poland respectively by the same scoreline.

The United States also advanced to the Finals, seeing off Austria 4-0 with Jessica Pegula notably claiming two singles victories in the triumph in Delray Beach.
