Spain have won gold in the mixed relay to start the last International Ski Mountaineering (IMSF) World Cup meeting of the season in fine style at Tromsø in Norway's arctic circle.

Ana Alonso Rodriguez partnered 2023 ISMF World Championship individual sprint gold medallist Oriol Cardona Coll to win in 29min 49.82sec.

Their margin of victory was a convincing 1:23.10 ahead of Lena Bonnel and Xavier Gachet of France who took silver in 31:12.92.

Bronze went to the Italian World Championship relay silver medallist Alba del Silvestro and Michele Boscacci in 31:25.52.

For Alonso Rodriguez and Cardona Coll it was a second successive World Cup victory in mixed relay this year.

They had been in front after the first leg and Alonso Rodriguez extended the advantage over Bonnel of France to give Cardona Coll an advantage on the final run in to home.

"We are super happy, after the World Championships, finishing the World Cup season of the Mixed Relay with a victory is even better than we could have expected," Ana Alonso Rodriguez said.

"The course was really impressive, and the views just top."

The pair had won the World Cup race in Val Martello Italy in February to lift the Marmotta Trophy but found themselves unable to repeat the performance on home snow at the World Championships at Boí Taüll where they finished only 5th.

"We have managed the race and the season very well," Cardona Coll said.

"We arrived here in the last race in good form, that’s very important for us.

"This place is just amazing.

"Now, I’m looking forward to the rest of the races."

Competition continues tomorrow with the vertical race which will be run as a time trial.
