Major League Baseball (MLB) has revamped its replay technology for the 2023 season with the goal of improving transparency around reviews, including through a partnership with Zoom Video Communications.

Zoom has become the official unified communications platform of MLB and presenting partner of the replay review.

During replay reviews, which numbered more than 1,400 last year, the crew chief is set to connect to the Zoom replay operations centre, which will be shown on national broadcasts on MLB Network and Apple TV+.

On-field umpires are also allowed to watch the replay operations centre assessing reviews.

It is hoped this will lead to a "more transparent and engaging review process".

The Zoom partnership is also expected to help the MLB streamline communication and promote collaboration with colleagues and customers by the MLB corporate offices and clubs.

MLB chief operations and strategy officer Chris Marinak underlined the importance of working with Zoom.

"We are always looking for innovative ways to leverage best-in-class technology to advance the MLB experience and deliver more to our fans," Marinak said.

"Partnering with Zoom, a category leader that reinvented the way we connect, was a natural next step for us.

"We are excited to integrate Zoom Contact Centre and other Zoom platform technology into our gameday operations and continue to modernise experiences in a secure, reliable, and innovative way."

Zoom chief marketing officer Janine Pelosi added: "MLB brings together tens of millions of passionate fans every season.

"Zoom’s rapid pace of innovation and obsession with making human connection easier and better is crucial to helping MLB evolve its experience and deliver unprecedented transparency and access to its fans.

"With MLB leveraging Zoom Contact Centre and Zoom’s all-in-one collaboration platform, we are able to truly show the world how a historical brand can continue to innovate and unlock new possibilities."

The MLB's instant replay review system was first implemented in the 2014 season, allowing a team manager or umpire crew chief to review disputed calls.

A series of separate rule changes have been introduced in this season's MLB, aimed at increasing the pace of play.

These include the introduction of a pitch timer, limits on defensive shifts and bigger bases.
