The former site of the Solomon Islands Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) housing in Honiara is set to be turned into a temporary car park for this year's Pacific Games.

Demolition work is already underway at the location, near the National Referral Hospital, despite the MHMS recently denying knowing about it or what new development would be carried out.

The Honiara City Council also claimed it did not have knowledge of the demolition until chief executive of the Hospital George Malefoasi revealed the plans.

"The short-term plan for the site after the demolition of the houses is to develop it into a carpark for the Pacific Games," said Malefoasi, as reported by the Solomon Star.

"The fencing of the site will be done soon.

"On the eastern side of the MHMS headquarters, we have evacuated staff, including some illegal settlers.

"Now they have moved out."

Malefoasi revealed that the long-term plan for the site is to establish a new MHMS headquarters or build a complex that will house the Disease Control Centre after the Games' conclusion.

But, for now, it will be repurposed for the Pacific Games, due to take place in the Solomon Islands for the first time between November 19 and December 2.

"What we are waiting to do now is to do proper demolition - dig out the full structures of houses and clear the debris and we will fence it," Malefoasi said.

"At the moment, there is the proposal to use the site for car parking during the Games.

"That is basically what the Ministry is looking at the moment for the site."
