Mikaela Shiffrin has broken the record for the most International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Ski World Cup wins after sealing gold in Åre for her 87th title.

The American made it two from two in the Swedish resort courtesy of a leading first run that proved vital.

She clocked in with a time of 50.93sec for the initial effort before registering the fifth-best time in the second round, although it was quicker in 50.84, to post an overall time of 1min 41.77sec.

Shiffrin managed to hold off challenges from Switzerland's Wendy Holdener and Swede Anna Swenn Larsson by 0.92 and 0.95 seconds, respectively, as the pair rounded out the top three.

The 27-year-old double Olympic champion was racing on the 12th anniversary of her World Cup debut on this date in 2011.

Yesterday's win saw her match Swede Ingemar Stenmark's record total of 86 World Cup triumphs achieved over a 15-year career from 1974 to 1989.

"It's pretty hard to comprehend," said Shiffrin.

"My brother and sister-in-law are here and I didn't know they were coming.

"That makes it so special.

"The best feeling is to ski on the second run because you have a lead and you have to be smart.

"I just wanted to be fast too and ski the second run like its own race.

"I did it exactly how I wanted and that’s amazing.

"To the whole team and all the people who have helped me this whole season and whole career, all these people reaching out now after all these years, it’s pretty incredible.

"I just want to say thank you for that."

Shiffrin is now on 13 World Cup wins this season, the most any athlete has claimed since her record 17-victory 2018-2019 campaign.

She has already won the Crystal Globe, for the 15th time, and now has 2,028 points.

It is just the third time a skier has eclipsed 2,000 points in one season after she achieved the feat in 2019 with 2,204 and 2013 saw Slovenian Tina Maze amass 2,414.

Shiffrin is expected to take part in the final races of the season which are set to be contested in Andorra's Soldeu from next Wednesday (March 15) to March 19.
