Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk has won her first Women's Tennis Association (WTA) title at the ATX Open, but refused to shake hands with her opponent in the final Varvara Gracheva, who is Russian.

Kostyuk dedicated her victory to the people of Ukraine, and was true to her word that she would not shake hands with any opponent from Russia or Belarus, as she avoided the traditional post-match handshake.

"Being in the position that I am in right now, it's extremely special to win this title," said Kostyuk as she celebrated her victory.

"I want to dedicate this title to Ukraine and to all the people that are fighting and dying right now."

The 20-year-old came into the competition ranked 52nd in the world, where she beat fourth-seeded Danielle Collins in the semi-final, to reach her first ever tour-level final match as she lost in the third round of the Australian Open earlier this year.

Gracheva, who was ranked 88th, and is playing as a neutral due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, also reached her first tour-level final match.

The final itself featured a high number of errors, as both players combined for 14 double faults.

Gracheva took a 5-3 lead in the second set, before Kostyuk evened it up at 5-5.

Kostyuk managed to pull away, as the match ended 6-3, 7-5 in favour of the Ukrainian, who earned the title.

This puts Kostyuk 45th in the world rankings, as she moves up seven spots.
