Logan Martin and Hannah Roberts claimed victories at the season opening BMX Freestyle World Cup in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia.

Australian Martin, the reigning men’s BMX Freestyle Olympic champion claimed victory with a score of 93.50.

An impressive opening run featured a 720 double bar spin and triple tail whips in opposite directions, but a fall on his second run led to an anxious wait for the double world champion.

Second place went to Marcus Christopher of the United States who scored 92.40 after a first run featuring a 360 downside quadruple tail whip and a 720 downside tail whip.

He fell on his second run while attempting a flare tail whip.

The podium was completed by fellow American Brian Fox, who scored 90.10, the best of the third heat.

Reigning world champion Nakamura Rim of Japan, who earlier topped qualifying, fell on both runs attempting ambitious tricks and ended 12th with 19.40 points.

In the women’s final, Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist Hannah Roberts of the United States overcame ankle pain which caused her to abort her first run, clinching victory with 89.40.    

The four-time world champion’s second run featured a straight backflip filled with bar spins and no-handers and headlined by a double tail whip.

Second place went to China’s Sun Jiaqi with a score of 87.00, with the podium completed by Perris Benegas of the United States, with a score of 85.40.   

Olympic champion Charlotte Worthington of Britain finished sixth with a score of 77.20.

The second round of the Freestyle World Cup season is due to take place in Montpellier, France, from May 17 to 21.
