The trials are scheduled for December 1 to 9 at the Cajundome and Convention Center, alongside the USA Boxing National Championships to decide the junior and youth high performance teams for 2024.

The 13 boxers who win their Olympic weight class are due to advance to the USA Boxing Olympic qualification team selection process in January next year at the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee in Colorado Springs for evaluation alongside the high performance team.

This evaluation by the high performance staff is expected to decide the make-up of the US' boxing squad for Olympic Qualifying Events.

The trials are set to mark the second time the event has been held in Louisiana after Lake Charles staged the Tokyo 2020 edition, and USA Boxing communications manager Brian Taylor welcomed its return to the state.

"USA Boxing is excited to be returning our premiere event to the state of Louisiana for another memorable US Olympic Team Trials," Taylor said.

"This event will not only showcase the best boxers in the United States, but some of the best boxers in the world that could be representing Team USA at next summer’s Olympic Games."

The President and chief executive of the Lafayette Convention and Visitors Commission Ben Berthelot said that the Olympic trials in boxing are "likely the most prestigious sporting event we have been a part of to date", and predicted a $3.14 million (£2.59 million/€2.92 million) economic boost in the city.

A revised qualification process for Paris 2024 being implemented by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) focuses on the continental multi-sport Games and two additional qualification tournaments next year.

This was introduced after the IOC stripped the International Boxing Association (IBA) of any involvement at Paris 2024 due to ongoing governance concerns.

Boxing has been left off the programme for Los Angeles 2028, and the IOC has even warned that it could be dropped from Paris 2024 because the IBA renewed its sponsorship deal with Russian majority-state owned energy supplier Gazprom and President Umar Kremlev warned that it would not give permission for its fighters and officials to take part in events it is not involved with.

The IOC and IBA, formerly AIBA, have long been at loggerheads and the governing body had its recognition suspended in 2019, but relations have slumped to an all-time low under Russian official Kremlev.

Last September, the IOC said it was "extremely concerned" after Kremlev gained majority backing at a controversial Extraordinary Congress in Yerevan, called after Dutch official Boris van der Vorst won a Court of Arbitration for Sport appeal against the decision to rule him ineligible to run on the eve of elections in Istanbul in May.

IBA members voted against holding a fresh election, and Kremlev has since sparked further anger among van der Vorst's Common Cause Alliance - of which USA Boxing is a member - by permitting Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under their own flags despite the war in Ukraine.

This, plus "false and exaggerated statements from IBA leadership, opaque financial management and dependence on sanctioned companies" were cited by USA Boxing earlier this week for its decision to withdraw from this year's IBA Women's Boxing World Championships in New Delhi and Men's World Championships in Tashkent.

The IBA has sought to blame former President and ex-IOC Executive Board member CK Wu for corruption controversy.

The US is the most successful boxing nation in Olympic history with 50 gold medals, although it only won three silvers and a bronze at Tokyo 2020.

Boxing events at Paris 2024 are due to be held from July 27 to August 10 at the North Paris Arena and Roland-Garros Stadium.
