Shiffrin surpassed fellow American Lindsey Vonn's 82 World Cup career wins on the women's circuit yesterday, and a dominant performance in the Italian resort moved her to within two of the overall men's and women's record held by Sweden's Ingemar Stenmark.

The runaway overall leader again set the pace in the first run with a time of 1min 00.56sec on the Erta course, giving her a lead of more than half-a-second over Sweden's Olympic champion in the discipline Sara Hector, who notched 1:01.07.

Shiffrin, last to race on the second run, had a big advantage, and clinched a ninth win of the season with a 1:02.72 effort for a total of 2:03.28.

"Today I was quite tired and I am on not the best moment in my monthly cycle, so I am emotional and tired and I just want to sleep," she said afterwards.

"At the end of the day it’s really just two runs that are one minute long.

"You always have energy to do that."

A solid performance from Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway helped her to finish second in 2:04.10 with runs of 1:01.28 and 1:02.82.

Hector held on to third despite a 1:03.40 second run, ensuring she finished in 2:04.47.

Slovakia's Petra Vlhová was fourth in 2:04.65, while Olympic bronze medallist Lara Gut-Behrami of Switzerland clocked the quickest time of the second run with 1:02.30, but had too much to do after a 13th-placed 1:02.36 on the first.

She finished 0.01 behind Vlhová.

Italy's Marta Bassino was third with 1:01.21 on the first run, and looked on course for a podium finish in the second before missing a gate.

Shiffrin extended her overall lead for the season, moving onto 1,517 points.

She is followed by Gut-Behrami on 906 and Vlhová on 896.

Špindlerův Mlýn in Czech Republic is set to host back-to-back slalom events on Saturday (January 28) and Sunday (January 29) before a break for the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships in Courchevel and Méribel from February 6 to 18.
