North Carolina has been awarded the 2029 International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Games following a unanimous decision by the organisation's Executive Committee here.

The American state initially ran for the 2027 Games but missed out to Chungcheong Megacity.

The bid, led by Hill Carrow, was given the subsequent edition's hosting rights after a 21-0 vote here just days before the start of the Lake Placid 2023 Winter World University Games.

North Carolina lost by 14 votes to seven in November for the 2027 Summer.

"We were very impressed with what North Carolina has to offer for the FISU World University Games from our site visits, their candidature dossiers, and the presentation to our Executive Committee in conjunction with their original bid for 2027," said FISU Acting President Leonz Eder.

"Even though North Carolina was not successful with its bid for the 2027 FISU Games last autumn, we have worked diligently with our membership and staff since then, on the best way to secure North Carolina USA as a future host of the FISU World University Games.

"It is important for our National University Sports Federations that we offer as much certainty for them as possible for the future and we're grateful for this opportunity to do so."

The American market is thought to be a main target for FISU due to the financial power and support of collegiate sport in the country.

North Carolina's bid encompasses the Triangle Region which boasts 19 colleges and universities with a student population of more than 260,000.

These include renowned sporting and research institutions North Carolina State University, Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

In addition to Carrow, the bid committee featured the North Carolina secretary of state Elaine Marshall and United States International University Sports Federation President Dan Guerrero.

"We're feeling great now, way better than that," Carrow told insidethegames about being awarded the Games after losing out on 2027.

"Even when we missed out on '27, we felt like we had a tremendous amount to offer to FISU and the Games.

"There is a famous quote from one of our Presidents about persistence and how that's kind of the key to success, so it was important for us to keep at it."

Carrow was on the successful bidding committee for the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

The Utahn city took multiple attempts before finally being awarded the Games, something which gave Carrow optimism after the loss.

"Like an athlete that's trying to break that record or win that medal, we just kept going and you can see we've got a really good crew," Carrow continued.

"They're very supportive and very enthusiastic, and we've got the Governor's support from our state - they would love to do something like this.

"We pride ourselves on being a state that's focused particularly on college and universities, and this will be a great time to be able to showcase that and deliver a really fantastic athlete experience."
