World Athletics President Sebastian Coe has warned that climate change is "one of the greatest global challenges we face today", as he welcomed a joint initiative to reduce the impact made by sport on the environment.

World Athletics have joined the International Biathlon Union (IBU), the International Floorball Federation (IFF) and Swedish Floorball Federation (SFF) to explore ways of reducing their impact on the environment.

"Achieving meaningful change in a battle against climate change will require building innovative partnerships and collaboration across all sports, at all levels," Coe said.

They will participate in the Green Approaches in Management for Enhancing Sports (GAMES), a project which will be coordinated by the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, which has already made studies on the impact of football.

It will be funded by Erasmus+, a scheme run by the European Union to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe.

The project is set to run for a period of 30 months.

The programme has planned to include sport and the environment webinars, workshops on decarbonisation and communication, a series of surveys and other promotional aids designed to increase awareness of the extent of the problem.

"Decarbonisation is a global imperative for us to have a fighting chance to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius," IBU President Olle Dahlin said.

"The IBU has signed up to the Sports for Climate Action Framework and Race to Zero campaigns organised by the United Nations.

"We at the IBU are committed to significantly reducing the emissions caused by our activities."

The IFF are also signatories to the UN campaigns.

"We have been looking at ways to develop concrete actions," IFF sales coordinator Tero Kalsa explained.

"I am very impressed by the dedication of all participating parties and am confident we will see great results."

Touchline, the London-based publisher of the Olympic Review and The Sustainability Report are to support the project as communication and dissemination partner.
