Egypt and Namibia have been crowned the respective men’s and women’s champions at the African Hockey5s World Cup qualifier in Ismailia.

In the men’s final hosts Egypt ran out convincing 9-2 winners against Nigeria.

Egypt’s captain Amr Syed led from the front in the final, netting three times, while Mostafa Ragab and Hossam Ghobran scored two apiece.

In the bronze-medal match, Kenya defeated Zambia 5-2, with Bethuel Musambu scoring a double for the Kenyans.

Egypt proved to be the standout team throughout the pool stage of the men’s competition, as they won all four of their matches.

Egypt, Nigeria and Kenya all qualified for the inaugural Hockey5s World Cup, due to be held in Oman in 2024.

In the women’s final Namibia overcame Zambia 2-1, with Jivanka Kruger smashing home the opening goal of the contest for Namibia.

Early in the second half Namibia doubled their lead when Kaela Schimming finished a loose ball.

Zambia cut the deficit late in the game but Namibia held on for victory and the gold medal.

In the bronze-medal contest South Africa produced a dominant win against Egypt 7-0, including a hat-trick for Sylvia van Jaarsveldt.

Zambia, Namibia and South Africa all qualified for the inaugural Hockey5s World Cup, as a result of taking the top three placings in the qualifier.

Sixteen teams are due to feature at Oman 2024, in what is set to be the first World Cup played in the hockey5s format.
