Leonz Eder is set to remain as the Acting President of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) after Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin confirmed he would continue to delegate his responsibilities to the Swiss.

The decision was confirmed at an online Extraordinary General Assembly today.

Matytsin, appointed Russia's Sports Minister in January 2020, was re-elected for a second term as FISU President in 2019.

He formally stepped aside as FISU President in March 2021 in accordance with doping sanctions against Russia.

The sanctions following the cover-up of a state-sponsored doping programme included a ban on Russian Government officials holding positions at organisations which are signed up to the World Anti-Doping Code, which FISU is.

Today, the World Anti-Doping Agency sanctions against the Russian Anti-Doping Agency and Russia as whole, watered down by the Court of Arbitration for Sport came to an end.

At the FISU meeting, it was confirmed confirmed that Matytsin will "continue to delegate the functions of the Presidency" to Eder.

"Any changes to the future provisions for the Presidency of FISU will be subject to the consideration of the FISU Executive Committee," FISU said in a statement.

However, Matytsin told Russian state new agency TASS that he can "can return at any time as soon as I deem it necessary to assume the duties of President".

Matytsin added there are "no restrictions on participation in FISU events, I am actively involved in the work and informed about what is happening in the organisation.

"I keep in touch with colleagues and actively participate in dialogue with them".

When Matytsin first stepped aside it was expected that he would resume the Presidency today, but with Russia having since launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a Government official leading an international sports organisation would be met with firm opposition.

Matytsin has been critical of sanctions levied against Russian and Belarusian athletes because of the war.

FISU has already barred Russian and Belarusian athletes from Lake Placid 2023.

FISU also stripped Yekaterinburg's right to stage the Summer World University Games next year over the attack on Ukraine.

Eder was FISU first vice-president before taking over as Acting President.

Besides the leadership update, Eder provided a report on recent FISU activities at today's Extraordinary General Assembly.

This covered preparations for the FISU Winter World University Games due to begin in Lake Placid on January 12 and last until January 22.

Last month, Acting President Eder told insidethegames that he was "ready to serve for FISU as I did in the past years, but in which function is not the most important question".

During his tenure, Eder has overseen the award of the Summer and Winter editions of the 2025 FISU World University Games to Rhine-Ruhr and Turin, respectively.

He was also in charge when the FISU Executive Committee last month awarded the 2027 FISU Summer Games to Chungcheong Megacity in South Korea.
