Habu Gumel has earned a fifth term in office as President of the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) after winning an election by two votes in Jalingo today.

Gumel, who has served as President of the NOC since 2014, and previously led the organisation from 2002 to 2010, was up against Ibrahim Gusau and Sani Ndanusa in today’s election.

Gumel defeated Ndanusa by 21 votes to 19, as reported by The Premium Times.

Gumel became a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2009, a position he held for ten years, and is now an honorary member of the IOC.

His closest rival in today’s vote Ndanusa led the NOC from 2010 to 2014.

Gumel is a former chairman of the Nigerian Volleyball Federation and had two spells as President of the Confederation of African Volleyball.

In the run-up to the election, an opposition group called United Sports Stakeholders called on Gumel to resign and abandon plans to stand for re-election.

They described him seeking re-election to the post for a fifth time as "despicable" and called on him to allow a "younger, vibrant and dynamic" candidate to take over the Presidency.

Other elective roles were also decided today, with Solomon Ogba re-elected as first vice-president after defeating challenger Francis Orbih by 24 votes to 16.

Ishaku Tikon was returned as second vice-president unopposed, with former National Basketball Association player Olumide Oyedeji voted in as third vice-president and Olabisi Joseph voted in as fourth vice-president.

Other roles contested were secretary general, won by hockey official Tunde Popoola, deputy secretary general won by Abdullahi Mohammed, treasurer won by Musa Kida and public relations officer won by Tony Nezianya.
