Eiffage Polska Budownictwo SA has signed a deal with Kraków authorities to carry out the work, ending a search which was in its sixth month.

The work now has an estimated cost of almost PLN99 million (£18.1 million/$22.2 million/€21.1 million) - an increase in excess of PLN10 million (£1.8 million/$2.2 million/€2.1 million) on what the Kraków Sport Infrastructure Management Board was projecting.

Poland's Ministry of Sport and Tourism has agreed to make up the shortfall.

There is a tight turnaround to complete modernisation at the venue which is due to hold the European Games Opening Ceremony on June 21.

The stadium façade is due for a facelift, while windows and doors are also to be replaced as part of an upgrade to the ventilation, air-conditioning and heating systems.

Henryk Reyman's Municipal Stadium will use energy more efficiently once the work is complete, it is promised.

As well as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the venue is also due to host rugby sevens during the European Games.

Kraków-Małopolska 2023 is due to be the third edition of the multi-sport event, with Poland joining Belarus and Azerbaijan on the list of hosts.
