LIV Golf player Joaquín Niemann still wants to play at next year's home Pan American Games and has expressed confidence the schedule will allow him to do so.

Still only 24, Niemann is already considered by many to be Chile's best-ever golfer and won twice on the PGA Tour before defecting to LIV earlier this year.

LIV events do not currently come with Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points, which are used to determine qualification for various tournaments including majors and the Olympics.

However, the LIV calendar appears of more immediate concern to Niemann, who is all but certain of a place to represent Chile at the Pan American Games should he want one.

Niemann told ADN he would "most likely" be playing at Santiago 2023, but was awaiting publication of the full LIV schedule for 2023.

"I'm waiting for the league dates to be 100 per cent sure," Niemann added.

"It was already a dream to see all these people here, play the Pan American Games and fight for a medal in Chile, it will be incredible."

LIV Golf is yet to release its full 2023 schedule.

Many players cited a reduced number of tournaments as a reason for joining the Saudi-funded league, which the PGA Tour is at war with.

Niemann has fallen to 22nd in the OWGR, down from a career high of 15th.

He is one of two distinguished young Chilean players making headlines in men's golf, along with Mito Pereira.

Pereira had a breakout 2022, finishing third at the Professional Golfers' Association of America Championship after leading at the start of the 72nd hole, and played in his first Presidents Cup.

Niemann finished in a tie for 10th at last year's delayed Olympics in Tokyo, four shots off the lead and one short of joining a seven-way playoff for third place.

Compatriot Pereira was in that playoff.

Chile has never held the Pan American Games before and Santiago 2023 has been given dates of October 20 to November 5.

Prince of Wales Country Club in La Reina has been chosen as the golf venue.

Golf has been on the Pan American Games programme since Toronto 2015.
