All focus will be on Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway when the European Cross Country Championships starts tomorrow in Turin.

An Olympic and world gold medallist, he is the defending champion in the event and if his current form anything to go by, Ingebrigtsen is going to add another title in Italy.

The European champion will face other medallists from the Munich 2022 European Athletics Championships in Mohamed Katir of Spain and Italy’s Yemaneberhan Crippa.

Yann Schrub of France and Italian Osama Zoghlami will ensure the field for the men’s 10 kilometres will be an exiting contest.

If Ingebrigtsen claims gold, he will become only the third senior men’s back-to-back winner after Serhiy Lebid of Ukraine and Portugal’s Paulo Guerra.

Among women, Ingebrigtsen’s compatriot Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal will be hoping to add to her medal record at the event.

She won five successive silver and bronze medals between 2015 and 2019.

But in Dublin, she finally managed to get the top prize although it was not a smooth victory.

Her main challenger would be Germany’s Konstanze Klosterhalfen.

Klosterhalfen, who won the 5000m gold in Munich this year, combined with her half marathon debut in Valencia, where she clocked 65:41 for the win, will add to her confidence.

Yasemin Can of Turkey, who won four gold medals in the event, will be hoping to bounce back from the disappointment last year.
