It is part of the NFL's partnership with the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) to raise the profile of the sport worldwide as it continues to push for a spot at a future Olympic Games.

The original short film, titled Journey to Gold, features the underdogs Mexico defeating the nation where flag football originates and dominates - the US.

Quarterback and IFAF Athletes' Committee chair Diana Flores led the Mexican team to victory.

An all-women production company shot the short in Mexico City over two days with Lookalike Productions.

Flores is a main feature in the film, alongside team-mates Rebeca Landa, Silvia Contreres and Ana Rojano.

It is presented in Spanish, but an English version of the documentary is to premiere this week to coincide with the NFL international match between the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

A longer Spanish-speaking version is in post-production and is set to be released later this year.

"It was an incredible honour to share my story and those of my team-mates as part of this film and I am grateful to the NFL for helping to amplify our voices," said Flores. 

"The journey we have been on as a team from winning The World Games to standing in the middle of our National Stadium in Mexico City on Monday night with close to 80,000 fans cheering for us has been nothing short of amazing. 

"It is one of the most special experiences of my life and we’re just getting started. 

"I hope that our journey inspires others to take up the sport that I love."

Mexico defeated the US 39-6 in the women's flag football final at the World Games.
