The Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) has appointed former President Dodou Joof as Honorary Life President at its Annual General Assembly in Bakau.

Former sprinter Joof became GNOC President in 2016, having held a number of administrative positions in sports including athletics and cycling.

He opted not to stand for re-election with the GNOC last year and was succeeded by International Olympic Committee honorary member Beatrice Allen, but retains his Presidency of the Gambia Athletic Association which he has held since 2011.

The General Assembly approved reports from the secretary general Yorro Njie and treasurer Muhammed Jagana, and adopted the budget presented for 2023.

Jagana's report outlined a budget surplus for 2021 of GMD 1.5 million (£20,200/$24,400/€23,500).

Allen expressed the GNOC's continued support for National Federations in its efforts to ensure participation at major events.

"We look forward to participating in the African Games, ANOCA [Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa] Youth Games and ANOCA Beach Games in the future," she said, as reported by Gambian newspaper The Point.

"The administration will continue to work with the respective national associations to prepare them for the games mentioned to ensure The Gambia's participation."

The Gambia was represented by four athletes at last year's Tokyo 2020 Olympics, although the country is yet to win a medal at the Games.

It won a silver in judo at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games courtesy of Faye Njie in the men's 73 kilograms division.
