Rhys McClenaghan has made history as the first-ever gold medallist at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships for Ireland, with an emphatic victory in the men's pommel horse final in Liverpool.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games and European champion stood atop the podium for the first time on the world stage, having claimed bronze at the World Championships in 2019.

A combination of a high difficulty score and a clear best execution gave the 23-year-old the gold medal with a total of 15.300.

It was a history-making podium, with Ahmad Abu Al Soud getting Jordan its first medal of any colour by claiming the silver with a score of 14.866, in front of Armenian Harutyun Merdinyan, who won his second world medal at the age of 38.

His score was 14.733.

Giarnni Regini-Moran secured a popular victory for the host nation, with the British gymnast edging out all-around gold medallist Daiki Hashimoto in the men's floor exercise final.

He scored 14.533 to the Japanese's 14.500.

Hashimoto's compatriot Ryosuke Doi took the bronze medal just ahead of France's Benjamin Osberger and Italian Nicola Bartolini with 14.266.
