The Malta Paralympic Committee (MPC) has held its first ever Para sport classification development seminar at the National Football Stadium in Ta’Qali, Malta.

The development seminar was hosted by Professor Bartosz Molik, the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation Europe’s classification chairman, and Iain Gowans, who competed for Britain in swimming at the Atlanta 1996 Paralympic Games, and also served as classification manager at the London 2012 Paralympics.

Molik and Gowans hosted the course for healthcare professionals, sports professionals and students, exploring the topic of classification within Para sport.

Participants learned of the difference between medical evaluation and Para sport classification and took part in an observation session during wheelchair basketball training and a subsequent friendly match.

The seminar concluded with a workshop on how healthcare and sports professionals can work with the MPC to devise a framework and national action plan for Para sport classification.

The MPC said it expressed its gratitude to speakers, participants and supporters of the project, with the seminar forming part of a series of Para sport development initiatives.

Malta has won seven Summer Paralympic medals in its history, two silvers and five bronzes, and has never competed at the Winter Paralympics.
