World Para Taekwondo could add a classification for players with autism ©World Para Taekwondo

World Para Taekwondo is seeking information on autistic taekwondo players, with a view to establishing a classification category for athletes with autism.

A survey has been launched, searching for details on autistic taekwondo players and how organisations interact with them.

Questions cover areas including the number of autistic athletes practicing taekwondo, definitions of autism and evidence accepted to confirm an athlete is autistic.

It is hoped that the information will help World Para Taekwondo establish a Para sport class under Virtus regulations.

Virtus is a global governing body for sport for athletes with an intellectual impairment.

World Taekwondo is already a Virtus member.

World Para Taekwondo has largely focused on athletes with limb deficiencies and amputees.

Taekwondo made its Paralympic debut at last year's Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, with a combined K44 category.

World Taekwondo has also made strides in deaf taekwondo, has introduced poomsae sport classes to cover all International Paralympic Committee impairments, and is now investigating an autism Para sport class.

The survey, which closes on Monday (October 31), can be viewed here.
