The main round of the Men's T20 World Cup will not feature two-time winners the West Indies, who suffered a shock exit following defeats to Ireland and Scotland, while Sri Lanka recovered to top the other group in Australia.

While they are not the same team which made history in 2012 and 2016, the Windies entered Group B as the hot favourites to progress to the so-called Super 12s.

However, they comprehensively lost their first match to Scotland, meaning another slip-up would be terminal.

After recovering versus Zimbabwe with a 31-run win, Paul Stirling powered Ireland to a commanding nine-wicket victory over the West Indies in a qualification decider today.

Stirling smashed 66 off 48 balls in Hobart to lead the Irish to their first Super 12s spot in 13 years, comfortably chasing 147 with 15 balls to spare.

It is the first time the Windies will not feature in the main phase of a Men's T20 World Cup.

Ireland finished Group B runners-up to Zimbabwe, who managed to post a marginally higher net run rate.

Zimbabwe limited Scotland to just 132 in the last Group B match, aided by Tendai Chatara accumulating impressive figures of two wickets for 14 runs.

The total proved little trouble as they got the job done with nine balls and five wickets to spare.

It is the first time Zimbabwe have reached the Super 12s.

In Group A, Sri Lanka bounced back from a shocking opening defeat to Namibia to win the pool.

Pathum Nissanka scored a half-century against the United Arab Emirates to anchor a convincing win before Kusal Mendis smashed 79 off 44 balls to set his team up for a hard-fought triumph over The Netherlands and guide the Asian champions to the Super 12s.

Despite that defeat, the Dutch advanced to the next round after wins over Namibia and the UAE.

The UAE beat Namibia to register their first-ever Men's T20 World Cup victory.

Karthik Meiyappan also recorded a first for the UAE against Sri Lanka, as he became the first Emirati to take a hat-rick in a T20 international.

The Dutch will be pleased that Max O'Dowd found form with the bat, having scored 71 off 53 in the loss to Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka and Ireland are now set to compete in Group 1 alongside Afghanistan, defending champions Australia, England and New Zealand.

Zimbabwe and The Netherlands are in Group 2, along with Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and South Africa.

The Super 12s is due to begin tomorrow with Australia taking on New Zealand and Afghanistan facing England.
