Spectators were left shocked as Nicolas Goyard, the defending champion for the men's competition, failed to qualify for the gold fleet at the iQFOiL World Championships in Brest.

Following a day of no competition yesterday due to a lack of wind, all eyes were pealed on the heat races on day two.

The Frenchman entered the event with many anticipating he would launch another title challenge, but instead he disastrously finished last in the first of three slalom races.

He won the next but then came 13th in the third, meaning he was unable to qualify for the gold fleet.

France's Thomas Goyard sits top of the rankings after recording wins in his first two slalom events before coming third.

He closed out the day by securing a victory in the course race.

New Zealand's Josh Armit came out on top in all three of his slalom events and registered a top five finish in the course race to establish himself in second.

The Dutchman then came third in the course race.

In the women's event, Pilar Lamadrid Trueba of Spain lived up to expectations by sweeping the board in her first four outings.

She concluded the fifth and final race in third.

The Netherlands' Lillian de Gues trails after ensuring she won three of her five races.

Britain's Islay Watson, who also notched three wins, completes the top three.

The iQFOiL World Championships are scheduled to continue tomorrow.
