Former Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) high-performance director Bernard Dunne has taken up the same role with the Boxing Federation of India (BFI).

The appointment leaves Dunne poised to lead India's boxers into the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where the sport is set to be among those where India has the best medal prospects.

Dunne left the IABA in May, having been on leave since Tokyo 2020 and not long after submitting a complaint against two volunteers in connection with the dissemination of an anonymous document which was critical of him in February 2021.

The IABA said at the time of Dunne's exit that it "deeply regrets" his resignation.

Dunne had been IABA high-performance director since 2017 and under his watch Ireland won two medals at Tokyo 2020 - gold for Kellie Harrington and bronze for Aidan Walsh.

That was up from zero at Rio 2016, a boxing tournament marred by contentious judging decisions, while Irish fighters also won 27 world and European medals during Dunne's tenure.

Harrington has been a vocal backer of Dunne.

"Irelands (sic) Loss in Indias Gain for sure", Harrington wrote on Twitter in response to the BFI hiring Dunne.

India won one boxing medal at Paris 2024 - Lovlina Borgohain's bronze.

The country won three medals at this year's Women's World Boxing Championships in Istanbul, including a gold for Nikhat Zareen.

While boxing is on the Paris 2024 programme, the tournament will not be run by the International Boxing Association (IBA) but instead an International Olympic Committee (IOC) Boxing Task Force, as was the case at Tokyo 2020.

The IOC suspended its recognition of the IBA, then AIBA, in 2019 because of wide-ranging governance concerns.

Boxing has been left off the provisional programme for Los Angeles 2028.

Dunne's professional boxing career included winning a World Boxing Association super-bantamweight title.
