Italy’s Martina Fidanza retained her women’s scratch race title on the opening day of the Track Cycling World Championships in France.

Competition is taking place at the National Velodrome in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, scheduled to host track cycling events during the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The opening medals were awarded in the women’s scratch, over 10 kilometres, with Fidanza retaining the title she won in Roubaix last year, by taking gold.

Maike van der Duin of the Netherlands won the silver medal, with bronze going to Britain’s Jessica Roberts.

In the women’s team sprint Germany’s trio of Lea Sophie Friedrich, Pauline Sophie Grabosch and Emma Hinze retained their title in a time of 45.967 seconds, a new world record.

China were forced to settle for silver, despite leading through 375 metres, before Germany’s turned things around in the second half of the race.

Britain claimed the bronze medal in 46.596sec, defeating the Netherlands.  

In the men’s team sprint Australia claimed gold with their trio of Matthew Glaetzer, Leigh Hoffman and Matthew Richardson leading through each split to take the crown in 41.600.

Defending champions The Netherlands took silver, with Britain claiming bronze as they won their race against Germany in 42.844.

Five finals are due to take place on the second day in the men’s team pursuit, women’s elimination, men’s keirin, men’s scratch race and women’s team pursuit.
