Rizki Juniansyah, one of the most exciting young talents in the world of weightlifting, bombed out in the 73 kilograms clean and jerk at the Asian Championships in Manama, Bahrain.

That left Doston Yokubov, the world champion at 67kg, to take the continental title, his first career victory at the higher weight in eight attempts.

There had been talks of a senior world record attempt by Juniansyah, the 19-year-old Indonesian who holds all three junior world records.

He went for a junior world record of 158kg in the snatch, which would have put him 15kg ahead of his rivals, but missed it - the first of four straight failures.

He was backed by noisy fans in a crowd that also featured plenty of support for the Saudi Arabia lifter Nawaf Almazyadi, another beneficiary of Juniansyah’s three failures at 186kg.

Not one of the six lifters made their final attempt in the clean and jerk, and there was a sea of red on the scoreboard when only three of the final 12 lifts were successful.

Yokubov, 27, made 140-182-322, finishing just ahead of China’s Xiang Shulin on 143-178-321.

Almazyadi took the bronze on 139-170-309.

Vietnam won its third title of the week when Pham Thi Hong, a 23-year-old double South East Asian Games champion, finished well clear of her five rivals in the women's 64kg.

Thi Hong made five straight good lifts and declined her sixth attempt, already way ahead on 100-117-217.

Two teenagers joined her on the podium, Thipwara Chontavin of Thailand and 16-year-old Sarah from Indonesia.

Chontavin made 91-110-201 and Sarah, the Asian youth champion who was moving up to this weight for the first time, made 89-112-201.

China will be the favourite in both of Wednesday’s medal events, Yang Qiuxia in the women's 71kg and Lu Delin in the men's 81kg.
