Defending champions China are set to meet second seeds Japan in the women's final of the World Team Table Tennis Championships in Chengdu.

The top seeds displayed once again why they are such a force to be reckoned with after disposing of Chinese Taipei 3-0.

Japan were equally as good, beating fifth seeds Germany by the same scoreline at the Chengdu High-tech Sports Centre.

This is the fourth consecutive time that the women’s team final will be between China and Japan, though this year's host nation has won on every occasion.

However, there is one good omen for the Japanese.

The last time the two teams met in the final on Chinese territory, which was in 1961, they sealed a 3-2 victory.

The rivalry is also scheduled to continue in the men's competition, with the nations meeting in the semi-finals.

China secured a 3-0 triumph against fifth seeds Sweden while Japan fended off Portugal to win 3-1.

The other finalist is due to be either fourth seeds South Korea or second seeds Germany.

South Korea defeated Hong Kong 3-1, while Germany recovered from 2-0 down to France to triumph.

The men's semi-finals and women’s final are due to be held tomorrow.

Some athletes have left Chengdu today on a charter flight.

As the competition enters its final two days, the International Table Tennis Federation has branded the closed-loop management system a "success" after it has kept "all participants safe and secure."
