Olympic bronze medallists Hong Kong suffered a shock exit in the women's quarter-finals after losing in a five-match thriller to Germany at the World Team Table Tennis Championships in Chengdu, while the first knockout round concluded in the men's event.

Hong Kong entered the tournament as the third seeds and seemed on track to progress to the semi-finals after initially going 2-0 up at the Chengdu High-tech Sports Centre.

Staring down the barrel of defeat, fifth seeds Germany responded in timely fashion to bring themselves level.

Nina Mittelham delivered the final blow to Hong Kong by besting Soo Wai Yam Minnie 9-11, 13-11, 11-5, 11-5.

Germany are due to meet Japan, the second seeds in the semi-finals, following their comfortable 3-0 victory versus Slovakia.

China continued their campaign on the other side of the draw with a 3-0 sweep of Portugal.

Chinese Taipei, who beat Singapore 3-2, are their next opponents in the last four.

Meanwhile, the men's tournament saw comprehensive wins across the board in the round-of-16.

Sweden and Portugal recorded 3-0 triumphs versus Belgium and Slovenia respectively, as defending champions China registered the same scoreline against Commonwealth gold medallists India.

Germany also defeated Croatia 3-0.

In the quarter-finals China are set to meet Sweden, Portugal are to due to face Japan, Germany are set to face France and South Korea are due to face Hong Kong.

The women's semi-finals and men's quarter-finals are scheduled to be played tomorrow.
