Hosts China were among the women's teams to book their spots in the quarter-finals at the World Team Table Tennis Championships in Chengdu today, as the round-of-16 matches got underway in the men's event too.

It was a straightforward victory for the favourites who defeated Hungary 3-0 to make it into the next round where they are set to meet Portugal, who won 3-1 against Luxembourg.

Also on that side of the bracket are Chinese Taipei, who won 3-0 against India, who now face fellow East Asians Singapore following their 3-1 victory over Czech Republic.

The only five-match contest of the round saw 2018 bronze medallists Hong Kong edge out Romania 3-2 in a decider when Zhu Chengzhu won 6-11, 13-11, 4-11, 11-7, 11-9 over Elizabeta Samara.

Germany play them in the next round after beating Puerto Rico 3-1.

Slovakia won 3-1 against France to progress, with 2018 silver medallists Japan joining them at the expense of South Korea, who they defeated 3-0.

In the men's round-of-16, 2018 bronze medallists South Korea eliminated Poland by a 3-0 scoreline - the same result for Hong Kong against Egypt.

The two teams now meet in the quarter-finals.

France knocked out England 3-2 with Felix Lebrun beating Samuel Walker 11-4, 12-10, 14-12.

Japan are through too after beating Brazil 3-0.
