Boxers from 27 countries are set to compete in the African Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championships, with bouts due to begin in Maputo, Mozambique tomorrow.

Twelve women and 13 men’s titles will be awarded at the Pavilhao de Academica in Maputo, a venue which has capacity for 5,000 fans.

Medallists at the continental championships will receive prize money, with $10,000 (£8,600/€9,910) to gold medallists, $5,000 (£4,300/€4,950) to silver medallists and $2,500 (£2,100/€2,480) to bronze medallists.

A total of 211 boxers - 64 women and 147 men - are set to participate in the event, returning to the calendar for the first time since 2017, when it was hosted by the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The first day of action is due to see 32 bouts across two sessions, featuring eight men’s categories getting underway and one women’s category.

All five African female boxers that medalled at this year’s Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, in May, are registered to compete in Mozambique.

Home attention in the women’s draw will focus on Alcinda Panguane, silver medallist in the World Championships in the light-middleweight category, and Rady Adosinda Gramane, who took World Championship bronze in middleweight.

In the men’s event among the fighters to watch is Mohammed Rabii, who won the welterweight title at the 2015 World Championships in Doha, Qatar.

After a spell in the professional ranks, the Rio 2016 Olympics bronze medallist is set to return to the African Boxing Championships in the cruiserweight category.

Rabii has happy memories of this competition having won gold on home soil in Casablanca, Morocco in 2015 at welterweight.
