Spain's Jesús Herrada of Cofidis edged it on the line to beat four other breakaway riders on the seventh stage of the Vuelta a España, claiming victory in Cistierna.

Over 190.1 kilometres from Camargo, a six-person group of Herrada, Britain's Fred Wright of Bahrain-Victorious, Australian Harry Sweeny of Lotto-Soudal, Israel's Omer Goldstein of Israel-Premier Tech, Italian Samuele Battistella of Astana, and Belgian Jimmy Janssens of Alpecin–Deceuninck managed to pull out a gap to the peloton.

More than three minutes separated them with 60km to go after the summit of Puerto de San Glorio, which at this point, saw Goldstein dropped back into the pack.

Not enough ground was made up by the peloton and the remaining five were able to concentrate on trying to win the stage themselves.

Despite Wright leading for most of the last kilometre, it was Battistella and Herrada who went to the line, with the Spaniard taking the win in a photo finish in a time of 4 hours 30min 58sec, winning his second stage win after his first in 2019.

Wright was third, followed by Janssens and Sweeny.

In sixth, leading the peloton, was Ireland's Sam Bennett of Bora-Hansgrohe.

No changes were made in the general classification, with Belgian Remco Evenepoel of Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl still leading the race by 21 seconds to France's Rudy Molard of Groupama-FDJ and 28 seconds to Spanish rider Enric Mas of Movistar.

Tomorrow's mountain stage is scheduled to go from La Pola Llaviana to Collau Fancuaya over 153.4km.
