Stefan Bissegger and Marlen Reusser clinched a Swiss double in the road cycling time trials at the Munich 2022 European Championships.

Competing on a 24-kilometre route in Fürstenfeldbruck, Olympic silver medallist Reusser won the women's race in 30min 59.90sec to successfully defend her European title.

Reigning world champion Ellen van Dijk of The Netherlands had to settle for silver for the second consecutive year at the European Championships, finishing 5.77sec slower than Reusser.

Van Dijk's compatriot Riejanne Markus rounded off the podium, clocking the third-fastest time with her 31:27.78 effort.

The men's race featured a dramatic conclusion, with less than one second separating Bissegger and fellow Swiss rider Stefan Küng.

Küng was bidding for his third successive gold medal at the European Championships, but his time of 27:06.49 was edged out by Bissegger's 27:05.96.

Back-to-back world champion Filippo Ganna of Italy was left 8.04 off the pace with his time of 27:14.00.

Slovenia's Olympic gold medallist Janja Garnbret continued her sport climbing dominance at the Königsplatz venue, winning her third gold of the Championships by triumphing in the women's boulder and lead combined event.

She began the combined final by comfortably posting the highest score of 99.9 in the bouldering element, with Germany's Hannah Meul and Slovenia's Mia Krampl her closest challengers on 80.9.

Garnbret and Krampl both reached the top of the lead route to secure the maximum 100.0 points and clinch a Slovenian one-two.

Meul notched just 85.0 in the lead element, allowing Austria's Jessica Pilz, the other athlete who reached the top, to leapfrog her into third place.

Garnbret finished with 199.9, followed by Krampl with 180.9 and Pilz with 180.6.

Sport climbing competition is due to conclude tomorrow with the men's boulder and lead combined final.
