The 28-year-old touched the wall first in the women’s 50 metres freestyle in 23.91 seconds to win her 16th European gold medal, taking her overall tally to 27.

It was an incredibly tight margin of victory as Poland’s Katarzyna Wasick was hot on her tail, finishing 0.29 seconds behind.

Valerie van Roon of The Netherlands settled for bronze with a time of 24.64.

Olympic champion Kristóf Milák also repeated his golden success in the men’s 200m butterfly.

The Hungarian, who was coming off the back off his 100m butterfly victory, recorded a time of 1min 52.01sec to edge out compatriot Márton Richard.

Richard touched the wall second in 1:54.78 to claim silver while Italy’s Alberto Razzetti secured bronze in 1:55.01.

The hosts enjoyed a stunning performance in the men’s 50m breaststroke thanks to Nicolò Martinenghi topping the standings and Simone Cerasuolo following in second.

Martinenghi and Cerasuolo finished in 26.33 and 26.95 respectively, from bronze medallist Lucas Matzerath of Germany who finished in 27.11.

The final men’s event of the day, the 1500m freestyle, saw Olympic silver medallist Mykhailo Romanchuk of Ukraine register an emotional win.

He completed the race in 14:36.10, which was 3.69 seconds quicker than the hosts Gregorio Paltrinieri and 14.76 faster than France’s Damien Joly.

Israel recorded a triumph in the women’s 200m individual medley, with Anastasia Gorbenko rising to the challenge of taking gold.

Clocking at 2:10.92, the Israeli had enough in the tank to hold off The Netherlands’ Marrit Steenbergen and Italy’s Sara Franceschi, who concluded their races 0.22 and 0.46 seconds after the champion.

The final individual swimming gold medal went to Italy's Margherita Panziera in the women's 100m backstroke in a time of 59.40.

This was remarkably just 0.06 quicker than Britain’s Medi Harris in second.

Kira Toussaint of The Netherlands completed the podium, coming 13 tenths of a second after Panziera.

In the mixed 4x200m freestyle relay, Britain's team of Thomas Dean, Matthew Richards, Freya Colbert and Freya Anderson proved too strong for the competition.

The quartet finished in 7:28.16 to defeat France’s Hadrien Salvan, Wissam-Amazigh Yebba, Charlotte Bonnet and Lucile Tessariol by 1.09 seconds and Italy’s Stefano Di Cola, Matteo Ciampi, Alice Mizzau and Antonietta Cesarano by 3.69.

In the diving finals today, also held at Rome's Foro Italico, Elena Bertocchi of Italy defended her women’s one metre springboard title with an impressive total of 264.25 points.

Sweden’s Emma Gullstrand accumulated 259.65 to win silver and fend off Italian Chiara Pellacani’s score of 259.05, enough for bronze.

British duo Kyle Kothari and Lois Toulson tallied 300.78 to win the mixed synchronised platform event.

Sofiya Lyskun and Oleksiy Sereda secured silver for Ukraine with 298.59 while Italy’s Sarah Jodoin Di Maria and Eduard Cristian Timbretti Gugiu sealed bronze with 290.28.
