Henrik von Eckermann added to his team event gold for Sweden by taking the individual crown today at the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) World Championships in Herning, on his horse King Edward.

They held their lead from earlier in the competition to take the jumping title on a total of 0.58 points, beating Belgian Jérôme Guery and Quel Homme de Hus, who finished on 3.35.

Maikel van der Vleuten of The Netherlands and Beauville Z N.O.P. claimed bronze on 5.96.

Guery had been in third behind Sweden's Jens Fredricson and horse Markan Cosmopolit, but moved ahead of them after penalties dropped them down to 10th.

Von Eckermann's gold was his nation's first individual jumping world medal of any colour.

In his interview, he was full of praise for King Edward.

"He has jumped so many clear rounds and done so many good things, it’s just a privilege to ride him," said von Eckermann.

"I knew Jerome was clear so I could have no mistakes.

"I had a really good feeling from the first round so that gave me confidence and the horse felt as fresh as he was the first day.

"I knew before I went in a fence down can happen so easily, but if I ride well and have a fault I can live with it, but I didn't want to go in there and not go by my plan, so I stuck to it and it worked."

This was the final day of competition in Denmark, with the hosts finishing top of the medal table with five golds, four silvers and one bronze medal.
