Athletes from Turkey, Japan, and The Netherlands were triumphant at the World Junior Judo Championships in the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil.

Ryugu Tanaka extended Japan's lead at the top of the table as he won the country's third gold medal in the men's under-73-kilograms event.

He faced a tough challenge against Georgian Giorgi Terashvili who took control of the bout immediately.

By the end of normal time, Tanaka had already been penalised twice but he was able to counter a pin attempt to take his own victory via submission.

The United States' Jack Yonezuka and Marcin Kowalski of Poland came away with bronze medals in the weight class after taking respective wins against Hungarian Daniel Szegedi and Kote Kapanadze of Georgia.

Turkey's Ozlem Yildiz then won the women's under-57kg with a hard-fought victory against Japan's Akari Omori.

Yildiz eventually pulled off the victory with a waza-ari while Italy's Veronica Toniolo and Rin Eguchi of Japan secured a bronze-medal finish.

Dutchwoman Joane van Lieshout won the last gold medal of the day in the women's under-63kg division.

She dominated Brazil's Kaillany Cardoso in the final after France's Melkia Auchecorne and Agnese Zucco of Italy won the bronze medals.

Action is due to continue tomorrow with champions set to be decided in the men's under-81kg, women's under-70kg and men's under-90kg divisions.
