It could be the last time athletics is on the programme, with plans currently in place to withdraw from future editions.

Cycling is to crown a new men's road race champion as Italian Sonny Colbrelli remains on the side lines after suffering cardiac arrest earlier this year, but Dutch rider Ellen van Dijk is expected to defend her women's title.

Sweden's Mattias Falck and Kristian Karlsson are threats in the men's singles.

Olympic champions Anders Mol and Christian Sørum of Norway return in beach volleyball as they aim to win their fifth consecutive European title.
