Scottish Cycling high performance manager David Somerville has praised the work of his athletes here at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games after coming close to their track cycling record medal haul, while aiming towards more success next year when they host the 2023 World Cycling Championships.

Speaking to insidethegames, Somerville said it was a "sting in the tail" to not surpass the record of nine medals today - with the best results being fourth in the women's scratch and men's points races - but admitted momentum was swinging in the right direction.

"It's been a good week of competition for us with some great performances and it's nice to win some medals at the end," he said.

"Two fourth places today which is a little sting in the tail but nonetheless the guys have competed well, we're delighted with the performances.

"We're delighted at a lot of the performances that didn't get on the podium as well."

After four days at the Lee Valley VeloPark, Scotland claimed one gold, five silvers and three bronzes, one short of its 10 medals on the track at Gold Coast 2018.

The country's record medal haul in all cycling events stands at 10 from Gold Coast, all in track, but hopes lie with mountain bikers Isla Short and Charlie Aldridge, as well as road specialists Anna Shackley, Sean Flynn and Finn Crockett.

"I think we have more medal opportunities across more events now, but we're a small nation and we're battling to stay competitive all the time," added Somerville.

"We won't be letting our guard down."

He admitted the loss of Olympic champion Katie Archibald - who was ruled out of the Games after a car crashed into her during training - was a struggle, saying "fragilities" were still there in the team.

"With Katie not coming you're wondering what that will mean [to the medal predictions] and that’s just an indication that although there's real strength, there are fragilities," he said.

"That’s my job and others to come away and build on that momentum and progress.

"Sometimes it's difficult to pinpoint the arc of progress.

"Glasgow was a shift change in Scottish cyclists being successful on the podium and Gold Coast again, and thankfully we've maintained it in Birmingham.

"The World Championships are going to be incredibly exciting.

"They're going to be in Scotland next year.

"It'll be a different flag, but you know, the guys are equally proud to represent themselves, their families, ourselves, Great Britain.

"It's going to be a tremendous time, I'm sure some of the guys will be there, I'm sure some of them will be successful, and I'm hoping some that didn't make the podium or didn't make the team will be there as well - and that's what building for the future is, continually moving forward."
