Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won at 49 kilograms after the weightlifting title she earned at 48kg four years ago on the Gold Coast as she finished with a Games record clean and jerk of 113kg, following her Games record of 88kg in the snatch, to reach a Games record total of 201 points.

After a hugely competitive game of weightlifting poker in what was always likely to be a competition for silver and bronze, Chanu, India’s golden girl of lifting, arrived to play her part in a session that was being feverishly enjoyed by the NEC audience.

Her first clean and jerk of 109kg was a Games record, and she went on to manage 113kg at her second attempt before failing at 115kg - four kilograms under her own world record.

Earlier in the competition, the race for silver was won by Marie Ranaivosoa of Mauritius, who recovered from a failure at 92kg on her first attempt to clear subsequent efforts of 93 and 96kg, giving her a total of 172.

The battle for bronze was won by Canada’s Hannah Kaminski, who cleared 97kg, but had finished 2kg down on her rival after the earlier snatch.

Kaminski thus totalled 171, leaving her a point clear of Nigeria’s diminuitive 19-year-old powerpack Stella Kingsley and Papua New Guinea’s 38-year-old Loa Dika Toua, appearing in her fifth Games, who both finished on 170.

Earlier in the day Malaysia’s Aznil bin Bidin Muhamad, winner at 62kg in the Gold Coast, effectively retained his title with victory in the 61kg following the International Weightlifting Federation’s alteration of weight categories.

Muhamad finished on 285kg - a Games record.

He couldn’t complete the jerk on his final attempt of 166kg but it made no difference to the final standings.

That marked a weightlifting double on the day for Malaysia following Aniq Kasdan's success at 55kg in the day’s opening session.

Morea Baru of Papua New Guinea took silver in the 61kg category as he did in the 62kg at the Gold Coast, finishing on 273kg.

India's Gururaja Gururaja edged out Youri Simard to take bronze with 269kg, beating the Canadian by one kilogram.

At the halfway point in the 61kg Muhamad led with 127kg, a Games record.

Silver and bronze in the opening contest of the day went to India’s Sanket Sargar, who finished just a point shy of Kasdan on 248, and Sri Lanka’s Dilank Yodage, who totalled 225.

Nigeria’s Adijat Olarinoye won gold in the women’s 55kg class, backing up her victory in the snatch with a best of 92kg with a best effort in the clean and jerk of 111kg that created a Games record total of 203 points.

A final effort of 116kg moved India’s Bindyarani Sorokhaibam, who had finished third in the snatch, into silver medal position.

England’s Frear Morrow earned bronze with a best effort of 109kg, equalling her British record, to finish with 198.

There were home disappointments as Catrin Jones of Wales and Scotland’s Jodey Hughes failed to reach the clean and jerk medal rounds having failed to register a snatch lift.
