Hosts England began the defence of their Commonwealth Games netball title with a thumping 74-22 win over Trinidad and Tobago here.

Eleanor Cardwell scored 30 goals from 30 attempts in the huge Pool B victory.

England only led 15-6 after the first quarter but restricted their opponents to just three goals in the second as they led 37-9 at half-time.

Joanne Harten scored 25 goals and Helen Housby 16 in the rousing success in front of a full house at the NEC Arena.

It means England have made the perfect start as they bid to retain the title they won for the first time in dramatic circumstances at Gold Coast 2018.

They beat hosts Australia 52-51 in the final after goal attack Housby scored with a penalty shot on the siren.

"Overall I’m pleased," said England coach Jess Thirlby.

"We inserted some people and made some changes during the game, which we afforded ourselves the chance to do.

"Trinidad and Tobago are tricky to play against - they’re great at disrupting our flow which we struggled with in patches.

"But in the main, what I saw was great impact off the bench and us problem-solving with real purpose."

Three-time winners Australia began their bid to reclaim the title with a huge win of their own in Pool A, 95-18 over Barbados.

Gretel Bueta led the way with 44 goals in the one-sided affair.

"We talked about respecting the opposition and the best way you can do that is by going and playing your best netball," said Australia coach Stacey Marinkovich.

"The score was what it was, but we still had to keep pushing and drive our standards, because you’ve got to keep taking steps forward."

Elsewhere in Pool B, world champions New Zealand beat Northern Ireland 79-20 in another large win.

In Pool A, Jamaica beat Wales 72-43.

Netball pool action continues tomorrow.
