Olympic gold medallist Max Whitlock, two-time Commonwealth Games champion Courtney Tulloch and three-time medallist Alice Kinsella head up hosts England's hopes of artistic gymnastics success at Birmingham 2022 here.

Competition is due to begin tomorrow at Arena Birmingham, a venue which held the European Championships in 2010.

Individual qualifications are on the schedule for tomorrow, with the men's team event marking the first gymnastics final of the Games.

Whitlock and Tulloch contributed to England's team gold medal at Gold Coast 2018, where they won the event by more than 10 points.

Canada took silver and Scotland won bronze four years ago, and they appear likely to challenge for the medal positions again along with Cyprus and Australia.

Tulloch expressed his belief that England could face stiffer competition at their home Games.

"The other nations are getting a lot better," he said.

"We know how good they are, but we need to focus on ourselves.

"If we do that, there's no doubt we will be standing on top of the podium."

The women's individual qualifications and team final are due to be held on Saturday (July 30).

The team event looks set to be hotly contested.

Four English gymnasts - Kinsella, Jennifer Gadirova, Jessica Gadirova and Amelie Morgan - contributed to Britain's bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

England had to settle for silver at Gold Coast 2018, with Kinsella, Georgia-Mae Fenton and Kelly Simm from that team all aiming to go one better in Birmingham.

Their prospects are also boosted by the return of Claudia Fragapane, who won four gold medals at Glasgow 2014 but missed out on the Gold Coast due to injury.

Canada claimed gold at the last Commonwealth Games, but are fielding a completely changed team in the English city.

Captain Laurie Denommée acknowledged that "we just need to get experience in a new environment", but insisted that the Canadian team had sufficient strength to medal.

"We'll do what we are trained to do and we'll see," Denommée said.

"The most important thing is to have fun, and that will probably help us to stay in the top three."

Bronze on the Gold Coast went to Australia.

The men's and women's all-around events are scheduled to take centre stage on Sunday (July 31), both including the silver and bronze medallists from four years ago.

James Hall of Britain and Marios Georgiou of Cyprus are set to feature on the men's side, while the women's event includes Australia's Georgia Godwin and home favourite Kinsella.

Apparatus-specific finals are due to be held on August 1 and 2.

Whitlock is the only gold medallist from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics competing in Birmingham.

He triumphed on the pommel horse at last year's delayed Games, but missed out to Northern Ireland's Rhys McClenaghan at Gold Coast 2018.

Tulloch took men's rings gold and vault silver at the Games four years ago.

The women's events feature two English defending champions - Fenton in the uneven bars and Kinsella in the balance beam.
