Egypt's Haydy Morsy and Amira Kandil won women's relay gold on home soil at the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) World Championships in Alexandria.

The duo were one of six to record a perfect score of 300 in the equestrian element, hit the front by topping the fencing standings, and never relinquished that lead.

A fifth-best showing in a swimming portion won by South Korea's Kim se-hee and Kim Sun-woo meant the Egyptians took a 14-second cushion into the laser-run.

Italy's Ludovica Montecchia and Alice Rinaudo started the laser-run in second and the South Koreans were a further six seconds back in third - but the Egyptians were faster than both.

Morsy and Kandil competed the laser-run in 14min 5sec, the second-fastest time in the field, and enjoyed a seven-second winning margin.

Mexico's Mariana Arceo and Mayan Oliver earned the silver medal, thanks to a rapid 13:50 laser-run, while Kim and Kim claimed third place.

"It was an amazing day with Haydy - the whole day was very good," Kandil said.

"To be number one all day, nobody in Egypt has done it like this.

"Yesterday we were taking pictures with the boys with their silver medals and we told them we would get the gold and they said 'no way!'"

None of the women's relay medallists from last year's UIPM World Championships made the podium today as Hungary's Tamara Alekszejev and Rita Erdos were eliminated during the equestrian element.

Erdos helped Hungary win bronze in 2021, while Belarus were victorious and a Russian Modern Pentathlon Union pair - competing under that banner with Russia's name and flag banned under World Anti-Doping Agency sanctions - placed second.

Athletes from Russia and Belarus are banned outright from this year's World Championships because of the war in Ukraine.

Egypt finished second in yesterday's men's relay, which was won by South Korean pair Jun Woong-tae and Jung Jin-hwa.
