Swimming prodigies Tolga Temiz of Turkey and Hungary's Tamara Elekes secured the first gold medals of the Summer European Youth Olympic Festival in Banská Bystrica here at the Plaváreň Štiavničky.

Elekes was a cut above the rest as she cruised to victory in the girls' 400 metres medley with a time of 4min 52.69 to beat Denmark's Martine Damborg by 2.130sec.

German Noelle Benkler finished close behind the Dane after 4:54.94 to round out the top three and holding off a late surge from Phoebe Cooper to keep the Briton off the podium by 0.27sec.

Despite the timings indicating complete dominance from Elekes, she got off to a slow start finding herself fifth after the first 50m as Cooper led the way with a blistering 29.97 opening length.

Cooper looked in charge before running out of steam in the final 150m as Elekes powered through the latter stages to claim a memorable crown.

The boys' 400m freestyle was a closer affair with Temiz snatching gold away from Italian Filippo Bertoni in an exhilarating final length.

The Turk reached the wall for the last time after 3:52.99 to win by 0.03sec against the European Junior Championships gold medallist.

Making up the podium was Germany's Arne Schubert who was 1.22sec off the pace but comfortably claimed the bronze with Hungarian Hunor Kovács-Seres finishing 4.45sec slower than the top three.

Temiz and Bertoni were neck and neck throughout the entire race as there was never a gap of more than 0.51sec between them.

That half-second gap was in Bertoni's favour going into the last 50m but an unbelievable sprint from Temiz ensured he was victorious.

Swimming is set to continue tomorrow in the Slovakian event with finals in the boys' 100m backstroke and 200m breaststroke events.

Winners will also be crowned in the girls' 400m freestyle, 200m butterfly, 200m breaststroke, 200m backstroke, and mixed 100m freestyle relay finals.
