Starting off in Casteinau-Magnoac over 188.5 kilometres, the flat stage was not expecting any surprises in the overall standings after Vingegaard extended his lead over two-time winner and defending champion from Slovenia, Tadej Pogačar of Team UAE Emirates.

Pogačar did try to make breaks to amount some time on the Dane, but he was kept in check by Vingegaard's team-mate and points leader Wout van Aert of Belgium.

With a kilometre to go, Laporte, also of Jumbo-Visma, surged into the lead to create distance to the other sprinters, giving himself enough time to celebrate his maiden stage victory in 3 hours 52min 04sec.

Belgian Jasper Philipsen of Alpecin-Deceuninck finished second, a second behind.

Italian Alberto Dainese of Team DSM and French rider Florian Senechal of Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl were third and fourth, ahead of Pogačar, who took five seconds out of Vingegaard, but still remains 3min 21sec behind.

On the penultimate day of the Tour is the time trial from Lacapelle-Marival to Rocamadour over 40.7km.
