UniSport Australia is set to mark Pride Day at its Nationals in Perth on September 28, using the event to celebrate the diversity of the university student community.

The UniSport Nationals are set to return for the first time since 2019, following two successive cancellations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

National university champions are due to be decided in 29 sports in the Western Australian city of Perth from September 24 to 30.

September 28 has been selected as UniSport Australia's Pride Day.

Pride Day seeks to provide education and awareness to student athletes, UniSport members and supporters, celebrate the student population's diversity and promote awareness of the significance of LGBTQI+ inclusion in sport.

Mark Sinderberry, chief executive of UniSport Australia, is hopeful that university sport can be used to drive inclusivity.

"University sport is a powerful tool to promote inclusion and acceptance.

"UniSport Nationals Pride Day demonstrates our members' passion for supporting and embracing inclusion and diversity through sport.

"This demonstrable commitment to LGBTQI+ inclusion seamlessly aligns with our commitment to providing a safe and welcoming environment to our diverse student population."

Pride Day is due to be held alongside the Nationals, which the flagship event for Australia's university sport governing body.

More than 6,000 participants are due to take part at the event, which has previously been held in Perth in 1999, 2004, 2010 and 2016.
