The United States Golf Association (USGA) has set its sights on the Paralympic Games following the conclusion of the US Adaptive Open in North Carolina.

The inaugural event took place at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club.

There was an international field of athletes at the event but it also served as the country's National Championships for golfers with physical, visual, and intellectual impairments

Although Paralympic inclusion is the ultimate goal, the organisation is aiming to develop an international qualifying circuit for the Adaptive Open.

"I think this [event] is at the top of the list of pride for my team in terms of what we’re proud of," said Mike Whan, USGA chief executive.

"This is the seeds of something different.

"I think our sport, right now more than ever, needs a message about what it’s really all about, because this isn’t about money and contracts.

"This is about meaning and difference and feeling included, and that’s what’s happening this week."

South Korea's Simon Lee won the men's overall division in a playoff decided against Sweden's Felix Norrman while Kim Moore topped the overall women's division to lead an American podium sweep.

"We all should be inspired watching the US Adaptive Open," Tiger Woods wrote on Twitter.

"Good luck to all the competitors and never give up!"
